The film portrays a Samurai who had chosen a life of devotion through traditional Japanese painting. He had been a Shogunate retainer in Edo. After the collapse of the Shogunate, he found freedom from the limits imposed on thought and behaviors by the ruling class of feudal Japan. He was lucky to have lived as an artist painting the beauty of life until his death at the ripe old age of 85.

He has not been highly recognized in spite of the extraordinary body of work he produced during his lifetime. There were artists like him in the late Edo period who had worked earnestly and humbly without ever reaching fame. Their passionate tales have never been chronicled and their names were lost to history.
